I've noticed that alot of the texts and childrens stories I've run across have pictures of animals or people doing tasks. Making animals noises (moo'ing if there's a cow, barking if there's a dog) or miming actions in an exaggerated way often makes the students laugh and smile. Plus, they'll often join in.
